Born in 1870 in Callander, Scotland, Eleanor Luisa Haverfield was the daughter of retired Army Major John Tunstall Haverfield, R.M., and his wife Luisa Hayside. After her father’s death, when she was fifteen, her family moved to North Kensington, where Haverfield lived with her mother, until her mother’s death in 1924. She retired some time in the 1930s to Box, Peaslake, Guildford, where she lived until her own death in 1945.
The author of more than forty-five books for children, mostly girls' school stories and youthful romances, Haverfield has been described as having a very Victorian sensibility.
